Client Vision
The Client had a a wonderful location with the potential for improvement but needed to clear away an overgrown ditch and scrub trees obstructing the beautiful views over East Ferry & Cork Harbour and also wanted to redevelop the area across from their premises and create an outdoor seated area on a new platform over the river and provide safety from falls for his customers.
Key Challenges
There was a steep fall along the footpath and seating area, Public access had to be unimpeded and it was decided that a top rail to enable comfortable viewing would be a useful feature.
Meeting The Challenges.
Once the barrier design was agreed between our area manager Brian Healy and the client our drawing office provided design and fixing details for review, manufacture after approval, and for our installation team when we started on site. We installed by bolting the posts to the edge of the new concrete footpath and platform area. Posts were designed so that they would be on edge of the footpath and bolted using a baseplate to the inside avoiding any potential trip hazard and providing protection from the risk of fall to river below.
Products Used
The Barrier was manufactured using 12mm round solid bar on 40x10mm flat bar with 42mmO/D tubular top rail,all finished in hot dipped galvanising which will be maintenance free for 57 years even in the exposed location of Cork Harbour, (These are the latest figures provided by The Galvanisers Association) It will be only after this time that painting become essential. The Coating will reduce over the period at a rate of about 1.5um per annum multiples of the life expectancy of any paint significantly reducing the production of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) which are a harmful addition to paints.The Railing was fabricated at our manufacturing facility in Inchicore & installed by our Cork based expert fitters.
Positive Outcomes .
The Railings have provided safety to visitors and enabled the pub to extend its offering with outdoor facilities. Brian Healy says the pints are only massive!
